Our flea and heartworm products are competitively priced with online retailers. We also carry shampoos, supplements (for skin, coat & joints), dental products, crates, leashes, collars, toys, treats, grooming supplies and more. The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) regulates all veterinary licenses and prescription drug laws. A veterinarian can not dispense prescription medication without examining the animal for the problem related to the medication being dispensed. In some cases a particular test may be required prior to dispensing a medication. Refills for animals with chronic conditions may require monitoring. These are not just guidelines, they are laws.
Any pet that takes medication on a continuous bases must have blood work every 6 months to screen for any underlying internal organ abnormalities that may warrant discontinuing use of a particular medication and/or changing the pet to a different medication. A few medications only require annual monitoring. In some situation, pets are monitored more frequently when they are initially started on a medication.
If you are a Visitor or Part Time Resident, we will accept a written, faxed or phoned prescription from you regular veterinarian if your pet needs something while you are on Hilton Head Island.
INTERNET PHARMACY POLICY
We will not authorize any faxed prescriptions to an Internet or Catalog pharmacy. To acquire a written prescription the client must come to our office. There is no charge if the written prescription is given at the time of an Examination. Any other time there is a $10 written prescription fee. All pets must have a current Exam, vaccinations and heart worm test to get a written prescription.
The reasons for this policy:
Internet & Catalog Pharmacies receive their products via "black market", or what the manufacturers call "diverters". Diverters are people who purchase large quantities of product from the manufacturer then resell it to the pharmacies. Because the manufacturer does not know how the product was shipped or stored, they will not honor their product guarantees. In some cases the product is actually counterfeit or from another country. If your products are purchased from a veterinarian the manufacturer will pay for the treatment of any illness their label guarantees to prevent or treat.
Several Internet pharmacies have been sued and significantly fined for violation of state prescription laws. Faxing one prescription can result in the use of that doctor's signature in unauthorized situations. Therefore we will not fax any prescription unless it is going directly to another veterinary clinic.
In most cases, the manufactures offer promotions to the veterinary clinic that are not available online or in catalogs. These promotions often keep the veterinarian's prices lower than the Internet. The Internet has the perception of costing less but that is often not the reality.
Veterinary Clinics offset fees by the revenue generated from their pharmacy business. If that revenue is lost, the veterinarian will have to raise other fees to compensate. Therefore the cost of veterinary medical care will rise. Most veterinary clinics have similar policies to protect you and your pet.
